We propose a wholesale reboot of the Institute’s oldest music class, 21M.011 Introduction to Western Music, to emphasize primary sources and critical thinking, concentrated in particular on effective written communication about student’s artistic values in keeping with the subject’s status as a Communication Intensive subject in the Humanities (CI-H). We envision a syllabus that replaces the current standard “music appreciation” textbook with our own custom-designed materials that present musical works and histories pitched at a significantly higher intellectual level while remaining fully accessible to students who do not have experience reading music notation.
