What you need to know
Students who are pursuing a degree at an institution of higher education other than MIT and have been invited by faculty in an MIT department, laboratory, or center to do research here, may apply for visiting student status. Current regular MIT or special students, or MIT students who have withdrawn or are on a leave of absence, are not eligible.
Each term, visiting students are subject to a registration fee and a student life fee for the fall and spring terms. The student life fee entitles you to use MIT’s fitness facilities and supports student life programming at the Institute. If your visiting student appointment does not correspond directly with the beginning of MIT’s terms, you are still charged the entire fee. If you leave before the end of the term, your registration fee may be prorated. Learn more about how proration works.
