There are a number of highly developed programs in music technology at our peer institutions (Stanford’s CCRMA, Berkeley’s CNMAT). MIT currently has relatively little to offer. What we do have in Tod Machover’s Opera of the Future group at the Media Lab primarily serves graduate students. In order to develop a compelling undergraduate program in music technology, we must have a physical location – a laboratory – to function as the center for research and course development.
