I am requesting funds to pay for the time and resources in summer 2018 to develop a new creative writing course “Testing the Bounds of English Through Creative Writing” for bilingual undergraduates at MIT. Currently, 10% of MIT undergraduates are international students and another 2,100 come from minorities in which English might not be their first language; such students could feel too intimidated to take existing creative writing courses. This course would allow such students to continue refining their writing and English in the company of other advanced English Language Learners as well as gaining an introduction to creative writing and literature. The course would include the writing of short stories, poems, and literary analyses as well as examination of the writing of both published writers and students to discover what is fresh (as a result of influences from their first language) and grammatical and what is ungrammatical.
